Varberg - the city by the sea! The fortress that is located centrally is Varberg's most known landmark. However, the city also boasts numerous museums, restaurants, and cafes.
Around the fortress there is a 3 kilometre seaside walk out towards the sand beach in Apelviken. The fortress dates back to the 17th century and has historical links with Denmark and Sweden. Inside the fortress you can find the Länsmuseet Varberg (County Museum), restaurants and a youth hostel.
Getterön (Getter Island) is located to the north-west of Varberg and is renouned for it's rich birdlife and Getterön's cliff bath. At the bath you can enjoy traditional open-air bathing.
Varberg is also called the Spa Town of Sweden due to the crystal clear spring waters located close to the city and the fresh sea breezes. There are a wide range of spa facilities in Varberg including at the Varbergs Stadshotell and Asia Spa who offer a spa experience inspired by India, Japan, Thailand and China. The hotel was recently renovated in 2007-2008 and has 123 rooms.
There are numerous other activities in Varberg, for example, golf, spa, fishing, windsurfing, bike trails and shopping in the town square.
Appelviken in Varberg is ranked among the best windsurfing locations in Sweden.
